How To Reduce Work-Related Stress At Work Or Your Home Office
“What could you possibly be stressed out about, I mean, you work from home already!” We hear that a lot—from people who don’t work from home! So how serious is work-related stress for remote workers?
We consulted the online business advice experts at Business Journals for some eye-opening statistics:
According to studies compiled by the American Institute of Stress:
"83% of US workers suffer from work-related stress
US businesses lose up to $300 billion yearly as a result of workplace stress
Stress causes around one million workers to miss work every day
Only 43% of US employees think their employers care about their work-life balance, or harmony
Depression leads to $51 billion in costs due to absenteeism and $26 billion in treatment costs
Work-related stress causes 120,000 deaths and results in $190 billion in healthcare costs yearly"(2)
These are some alarming statistics for sure. But what can remote workers do to relieve work-related stress?
There are a variety of factors that can contribute to stress and poor mental health in the workplace, including long hours, demanding workloads, job insecurity, and conflict with coworkers.
1. Take Care Of Your Health
Physical and mental health are inextricably linked. We point out several ways to maintain physical health in a previous post. Make sure you are getting enough sleep, regular exercise and are eating a well-balanced diet.
2. Seek Out Professionals
Consult your health insurance provider and thoroughly analyze available mental health benefits and take advantage of them. It’s also a great idea to explore how you can go above and beyond your standard insurance coverage with additional programs and policies.
3. Take Time Off
Make sure you are taking regular breaks throughout the day. Sometimes downloading an app or setting a timer can give you that extra reminder you may need. Plan your vacation times so you can take extended breaks off of work - you will come back feeling refreshed. Lastly, take time to do things that make you happy. It's easy to constantly work on the next task and work longer hours when you are working from home. This can put your body in "fight or flight" and keep your stress levels constantly elevated.
